Below is an overview of her professional experience:
- First Nation Labour Force Survey (Ongoing). Nichols was engaged by the a First Nation to conduct a Labour Force Survey of members aged 15 and above. The purpose of the survey is to identify employment barriers, training needs, and career aspirations to support long-term labour market planning. For this project, Mary co-designed the survey questionnaire and is responsible for analyzing results and drafting of a comprehensive report that will inform employment and training strategies.
- Socio-Economic Assessment of Sub-Regional Planning in Alberta (Ongoing). As part of a socio-economic assessment for Sub-Regional Plans, Mary analyzes Statistics Canada and regional datasets to assess baseline conditions and potential impacts. She is authoring key report sections on non-industrial land use, community services and infrastructure, Indigenous communities, and municipal fiscal conditions to support land-use planning and engagement processes.
- Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Analysis and Strategy (Ongoing). Mary is currently contributing to the development of a BRE Strategy, supporting business needs assessments, stakeholder engagement, and strategy formulation to strengthen SMEs, entrepreneurship, inclusion, and regional economic resilience.
- Metis Credit Union Feasibility & Market Demand Analysis. Mary supported a feasibility study for a Métis Nation by leading the analysis of survey data for the market interest component of a proposed Métis-focused credit union. She evaluated demand at both the individual/household and organizational levels, synthesizing quantitative findings to assess market readiness and inform strategic recommendations. Her analysis contributed to evidence-based insights on financial service needs, supporting broader feasibility considerations including viability and market positioning.
- Socio-Economic Baseline Assessment. Conducted comprehensive baseline data collection and analysis as part of a large-scale socio-economic impact assessment. Mary examined population trends, labour force dynamics (including Indigenous participation), income levels, housing stock and affordability, and social infrastructure such as health, education, emergency services, and community services. Synthesized findings into a structured, policy-ready report to support regional planning and evidence-based decision-making.
- Equipment Lifecycle Optimization and Replacement Policy Review. Conducted a literature and policy review of public-sector fleet management practices across Western Canada to inform a client’s Equipment Ranking and Replacement Framework. Applied lifecycle cost optimization, total cost of ownership analysis, and prioritization models to support fiscal efficiency and long-term asset planning.
- Economic impact of Alberta-based magazines on the provincial economy. Nichols was engaged by the Client to examine the economic impact of Alberta-based magazines, including the value generated by advertising and editorial content. For this project, Mary conducted a literature review on the economic contribution of advertising and editorial content, analyzed survey data from publishers, and authored the final report. Her work provided the Client with actionable insights to support sector growth strategies and inform targeted government policy and funding.
- Economic Impacts of a Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Project. Mary applied Statistics Canada’s interprovincial input-output model to estimate the GDP, labour income, and employment impacts of a proposed (CCGT) facility and authored a detailed report that translated technical results into clear findings.
